There are would-be independent states that aren't recognized by the United Nations; some you've heard of, and some may be new to you. This flag quiz will help you learn about 19 disputed areas and breakaway regions. A number of these places, Taiwan, Kosovo, Abkhazia, for example, get partial recognition from the UN, largely because they’ve been officially acknowledged by at least one UN member. Others, like Transnistria and Somaliland, are known as de facto sovereign states; they're breakaway states that operate independently from the countries that claim them. This study aid makes it easy to memorize the flags of all 19 of these disputed areas and breakaway regions.
